Ìý

Dear colleague

VotingÌýresults fromÌýCongress andÌýtheÌýhigherÌýeducationÌýsectorÌýconferenceÌý2021Ìýare now available andÌýcan be found here.

CongressÌýdelegatesÌýmade someÌýkey decisions about the major issues facing us as a sectorÌýand we now need to start an urgent consultation process with branches about the member level campaignsÌýdelegates mandated the union to undertake.ÌýÌý

To do this, we need maximum participation from membersÌý– theÌýkeyÌýdecisionsÌýmade byÌýCongressÌýnowÌýmustÌýbe conveyed to all membersÌýso thatÌýcampaignsÌýthat include them can commence. Ìý

NextÌýsteps: pay andÌýUSS campaignsÌýÌý

The best way to ensure broadÌýunderstanding ofÌýandÌýsupportÌýforÌýourÌýcampaigns overÌýpay andÌýUSSÌýis for you to start building the member level campaignsÌýin your branch now.Ìý

To do this we need youÌýto urgentlyÌýcallÌýaÌýbranchÌýEGMÌýbeforeÌý2ÌýJuly. In this meetingÌýyour branch committee, and ideally the delegates your branch sent to congress,ÌýshouldÌýbe available toÌýstart the process of education by reporting back toÌýmembersÌýthe outcomes ofÌýCongressÌýandÌýsectorÌýconference,ÌýandÌýansweringÌýquestions from membersÌýabout the debates and voting.Ìý

The more members you can get to come to your meeting the better, as this will show how many membersÌýare engagedÌýand ensure as many views as possible are heard. The numberÌýof members we engage is important, because they willÌýbeÌýessentialÌýtoÌýbuilding theÌýmember level campaign thatÌýwill be crucial inÌýwinningÌýthe battles ahead.Ìý

In the meeting we ask that you discuss the following: Ìý

For USSÌýandÌýnon-USS branches:Ìý

  • as a branch are your members ballot ready?Ìý
  • as a branch are your members ready to take action?ÌýÌý
  • what type of actions are members ready to take?Ìý
  • what does a win look like forÌýmembers?ÌýÌý
  • what questions do members have about either the USS pensions dispute or the 4 Fights dispute toÌýget campaign ready?ÌýÌý
  • what issues do membersÌýhave and how can we help address them in the campaign?ÌýÌý
  • in what ways doÌýmembersÌýthink we shouldÌýcombine issues of pay, casualisation, workload, inequality pay gaps and the USS pension dispute?ÌýÌý
  • what areÌýmembers’Ìýviews on the best timing for aÌýpay, casualisation, workload, inequality pay gapsÌýcampaign, and a USS pension campaign?ÌýÌý
  • are there any other issues in your branch which members consider important?ÌýÌý

Please provide feedback on your branch members’ views on each of the points aboveÌýby 30 June (in time for the meeting of the national higher education committee on 2 July),Ìýusing this e-mail address.Ìý Ìý

Your participation in this process is very importantÌýas all responses will be collated and presented to theÌýnext meeting of our higher education committeeÌýon 2 July,Ìýwhich willÌýhelpÌýdecide how we proceed withÌýallÌýmotionsÌýpassedÌýandÌýremitted.ÌýIn order to feed into the development of the next steps of our higher education campaigns over pay and pensions, you mustÌýsend the response of your branch hereÌýbyÌý30 June.ÌýÌý

Thank you.
