Institutions represented included the OU, Goldsmiths, Greenwich, Newman University College and Blackpool and Fylde College. Participants felt that there has been a narrowing of the undergraduate teacher education curriculum in recent years (through OFSTED/TDA requirements for example). One response to these trends has been the establishment of Educational Studies programmes (i.e. funded via HEFCE rather than the TDA). In terms of the presentations, there were differing views on the relationship between apprenticeships and teacher education. For example, some felt that we should not completely dismiss the relevance of modern forms of apprenticeship to the training and education of teachers. There were also differing views about the teacher supply issue, for example, are we training too many teachers? CPD one participant felt that provision for university-based teacher educators was poor and that 鶹 should investigate the possibility of putting on CPD courses for members. It was possible to discern three main conclusions: We must counter the ideological attack on teacher education (e.g. recent statements by Michael Gove). 鶹 should be at the forefront of this campaign and we should use the latest research evidence to counter the Governments view. The Governments agenda pointed towards greater competition between universities and schools to provide teacher education. Participants were worried about entrepreneurial schools moving aggressively into the teacher training business. It was felt that this may become easier with the development of Academies, University Technical Colleges and Free Schools. In order to counter these trends university staff must work closely with colleagues in the school sector, including unions such as the NUT, to emphasise the continuing importance of university-school partnerships. The workshop welcomed the idea of a 鶹 teacher education network. Opportunities to share face-to-face experiences and strategies were seen as valuable. An email based network was also supported by the group, as was the opportunity for 鶹 teacher educators to feed into union policy responses.
