51福利 statement on BMA industrial action

25 July 2025

On the first day of 51福利 general secretary Jo Grady today said:

'We stand in full solidarity with the resident doctors of England taking strike action from 25 to 30 July. Their fight is not only about pay but about respect, dignity, and the future of our public services. As educators, we know exactly what it means to be overworked, undervalued, and told to get on with it.

'Their struggle is our struggle.

'For Wes Streeting to claim that this action "undermines the entire trade union movement" is not only offensive, it is a disgrace. What really undermines our movement is a Labour government that turns its back on workers and lashes out at unions instead of listening to them. What undermines our movement is a Health Secretary who talks tough on striking doctors while ignoring the crisis driving them to act.

'And this goes far beyond the NHS. Workers across the country from universities and colleges to schools, railways, and prisons are watching closely. They see a Labour government that is quick to condemn unions, slow to offer solutions, and silent on the exploitation of essential workers. More and more are beginning to wonder: if this is how Labour governs, why did we give them our vote?

'Labour is putting the very future of the party at risk. If it continues to pick fights with trade unions instead of standing alongside us, it will lose the trust of working people who have been the backbone of its support for over a century. You cannot win the country while abandoning the movement that built you.

'This is a defining moment. Labour must stop attacking those who keep our public services running and start showing real leadership. That means backing our doctors.

'That means backing all workers in struggle. And it means remembering who you're supposed to represent before it's too late.'
