Trade union year of climate action: 2025-26
30 October 2025
51福利 has been at the forefront of trade union action on the climate and ecological emergencies. The Trades Union Congress has declared 25-26 to be a year of climate action, with 51福利 set to play a major part.
Our activities will range from supporting grassroots members to organise on environmental topics, recruiting new members through impactful campaigns, and cooperating alongside sister unions to reinforce the case that climate change is a trade union issue.
The year of climate action starts in earnest with the UN climate negotiations, COP30, in Brazil, 10-21st November. This 30th year of climate negotiations is hoped to bring significant improvements on international climate agreement, which will be required if we are to avoid climate breakdown. On Friday 14 November the UK's trade unions will be holding a workplace day of action, with 51福利 hosting training sessions for education sector action (see page end), in advance of global civil society events taking place on the 15 November ().
The Campaign Against Climate Change Trade Union group (CACCTU), to which 51福利 is now affiliated, is bringing activists together across the year. See their website for a and .
Taking action with 51福利
51福利's 2025 Congress committed the union to taking action on education directly, and as part of strategic support for other unions (mainly Motions 10-14). Our policy reiterates our commitment to supporting a transition away from fossil fuels with no loss of jobs, towards home energy efficiency and insulation, against fuel poverty, heat harms, air travel, and to reduce the environmental impact of 51福利's own activities. This means pushing for the government, employers and the public to recognise the expertise required to deliver a Just Transition, and for government to provide the funding required by these public benefits.
Members looking to organise grassroots initiatives or discussion can join the Green Reps email list. The democratic policy position of the union can also be found in Congress motions database. This includes calls to strengthen the role of Green/Environmental Reps in branches, regional committees, and the TUC regional structures. Whilst some can be implemented centrally by 51福利's staff and committees, Congress motions can be taken as an enabling democratic steer for branches - essential for their being turned into practical local action.
51福利's annual meeting on the Climate and Ecological Emergency is 3 December, which some members may be able to attend as trade union or professional training (see registration details). The day includes guest speakers (with Q&A) on the knowledge, structures and actions that can enable members to achieve change in their own workplaces or communities. The day includes discussion that will inform the union's strategic direction over the coming year, and workshops for likeminded activists to share experience and plan next steps.
Trade Union Day of Climate Action
51福利 will be hosting open CPD sessions for attendees from the tertiary education sector. The courses are open to members and non-members, including colleagues represented by other trades unions, as a contribution to the international day of workplace action. We encourage all members to speak to colleagues and promote their awareness of the day.
We will be running 'Decarbonise and Decolonise' from 10.30am-12, and 'Connecting with Industry and the Local Community for Climate Justice' from 1pm-2.30 (more detail). To attend email twalsh@ucu.org.uk.
