Lecturers to protest at Glyndŵr University
30 November 2009
Members of Â鶹¹ÙÍø at Glyndŵr University will stage demonstrations outside the university on Wednesday 2 December in protest at the dismissal of the union branch chair Hamish Murphy.
Demonstrations will take place at 8.30 - 9.00am and 12.30 - 13.30pm outside the gates of the Plas Coch campus.
It will be the first stage of a programme of industrial action by lecturers at the university in support of the reinstatement of Hamish Murphy. The demonstration follows a previously overwhelming vote by Â鶹¹ÙÍø members in favour of strike action and action short of a strike.
Margaret Phelan, Wales Official for Â鶹¹ÙÍø Cymru said: 'Â鶹¹ÙÍø will not stand by and allow the outrageous decision to dismiss Hamish Murphy to stand. Our members have backed Hamish through a strong vote of support for strike action if he is not reinstated. These demonstrations are a first step and we hope management will listen to the voice of staff and students at Glyndŵr University.
'Hamish Murphy was instrumental in bringing to light the problems of bullying and harassment in parts of the university. We believe he was dismissed for this role and our members are taking a stand to defend him.
'We have said from day one that the university can resolve this problem and help to build a new culture of co-operation with Â鶹¹ÙÍø to deal with the serious problems facing Glyndŵr University. Reinstating Hamish will pave the way for Â鶹¹ÙÍø to get round the table to find a way forward to deal with the problems of bullying and harassment.
'The ball is in their court.'
