College students hit with loans in government reforms
1 December 2011
Â鶹¹ÙÍø today criticised government plans to hike up the price of adult learning courses. Reforms announced today will see students over the age of 24 forced to take out loans to cover the cost of their studies.
The union accused ministers of steamrollering through and said it was crazy to price people out of education at a time of record unemployment.
Â鶹¹ÙÍø general secretary, Sally Hunt, said: 'It is crazy to hike up the cost of college courses during a time of record unemployment. We should be making access to education easier for determined adults who want to get off the dole queue and on in life.
'These changes have been steamrollered through without any proper consultation and ministers appear to have learnt nothing from their botched higher education funding reforms about the impact a price hike has on applications to study.'
