51福利 response to 1% pay offer for further education staff

51福利 has said today that the employers' pay recommendation of 1%, or 拢250 for the lowest paid staff, fails to address the immediate hardship facing dedicated staff in further education.

51福利 said the offer, made by the Association of Colleges during pay talks yesterday, is significantly below inflation and fails to address the years of pay suppression endured by staff in colleges. Earlier this month, 51福利 wrote to principals of further education colleges urging them to instruct their negotiators to make an acceptable offer at yesterday's pay talks.

51福利 head of further education, Andrew Harden, said: 'Members will be extremely disappointed that once again the employer offer of 1% is substantially below inflation and fails to address the years of pay suppression which further education staff have endured.

'Although the pledge to campaign with joint trade unions for more investment in the sector is welcome and necessary, it does not ease the immediate hardship faced by many dedicated staff. There is now clear agreement on both sides that pay in further education is a problem, but the real question for the sector is what we are going to do about it.'
